Taghazout Morocco: Must-try Activities and Experiences

taghazout morocco: activities to do

Taghazout is a small, laid-back fishing town located on the Atlantic coastline, just about 12 miles or 19 km north of Agadir. Although it is a fishing village, its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, in addition to its beautiful wavy beach, has made it an attractive destination for tourists, especially surfers. See the map below.

It's simply one of the most famous surf destinations in the world. Since the 1960s, surfers from all around the globe visit Taghazout to ride waves and catch some bohemian vibes. But this charming town, however, has more things to add to your surf experience than just waves and vibes. And if surfing isn't your thing, then don't worry, Taghazout would still be worthy of visiting.

This post is here to help you learn about Taghazout and the activities you can enjoy when visiting. Since it's a small village, it won't usually take you more than two days to try all of these activities. However, Taghazout is all about slowing down and living in the moment. Maybe you'd even love it there and decide to settle down for some time.

Enjoy Moroccoan Food in Taghazout

food in taghazout: sardines

Taghazout has some great restaurants where you can have a taste of traditional Moroccan food. Since it's a fishing village, you can always count on having some fresh fish cooked the Moroccan way. We recommend having sardines either grilled, fried, or ground in tagines. Accompanied by salads and drinks, they make a delicious meal.

Moroccan food in Taghazout is diverse. If you're not into seafood, you can still enjoy different options. Alcohol is also served in Taghazout in some restaurants and hotels, so why not have a glass of your favorite drink while enjoying a calming view of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're on a budget, or if you simply don't like dining in restaurants and fancy hotels, then it's okay. Life in Taghazout is very flexible and easy-going. You can always buy fresh fish directly from fishermen, some coal from local stores, and a lighter. Find a spot along the coastline, and cook your own meal. Even better, buy a fishing rod and go catch some fish.

Fishing in Taghazout

Since it's a fishing town, why not go fishing in Taghazout? All you'd need is a fishing rod and a good spot. Moroccan coastlines have some great, delicious fish to catch. Taghazout is on the coastline, so you'd definitely find good spots that are teeming with fish. And it doesn't matter if you're a pro or a beginner. People there are friendly and eager to help. Just ask for help and you'll get it.

It's not usual, but you can accompany other fishermen on traditional boats. Find a local fisherman with a boat and pay him for a fishing trip. It shouldn't cost a fortune, and you'll have a unique experience. Just be careful, local fishing boats are small, and there are no safety protocols on them. Always follow your guide's instructions and never go on a boat if you can't swim.

Fishing in Taghazout, especially from the beach or the coastline, is very relaxing. In the evening, you'll get the opportunity to listen to seagulls, watch the vast ocean, and witness some incredible sunsets. It's a relaxing experience, but you should always be careful so you don't trip and fall on sharp rocks, drown, or accidentally hook a surfer.

Swimming and Sunbathing

I repeat: Taghazout is all about chilling. It's sunny all year round, and the water is suitable for swimming as well, not just surfing. In fact, some people practice what's called body surfing, which is a sport that combines surfing and swimming. Instead of using surfboards, they use their bodies to ride waves. Maybe give body surfing a try or simply enjoy regular swimming.

Even in winter, you can still get tanned in Taghazout. The whole region is known for its warm weather and sunny days. When people in other regions struggle with cold, people in Taghazout and nearby towns enjoy surfing and sunbathing. Some tourists visit Taghazout and Agadir solely for its warm weather, as it offers an escape from winter in their homeland, especially Europeans.

Surfing Taghazout's beach or at least having a sunbathe is a must-do. Don't worry if you've never tried surfing before; you'll find local surf instructors who will be thrilled to help you. More than that, you'll find people from all around the world to share this learning experience with. While doing that, the sun will always be up there, blessing you with some tanned skin and vitamin D even in winter.

Watching Sunsets

Taghazout has stunning sunset views. Watching sunsets in Taghazout would be an extra activity you could do. Simply look at the sky over the water and watch as the sun sets, saying goodbye. Even better, take some pictures! If your phone has a good camera or if you have a professional camera, then you'd have some great shots to remember Morocco with.

By the way, taking pictures is another activity you could do in Taghazout. Not just of sunsets, but of people surfing, stray cats and dogs, and more. There's so much to take photos of. Taking photos in public is legally allowed in Taghazout, and people would be happy to be included in your photos.

Remember to bring a jacket with you if you're planning to watch sunsets outside. It might get cold as the sun goes down. I personally prefer watching Taghazout's sunsets from a car by the cliff. So why not rent a car, bring some snacks, and just chill while watching those colorful shows over the ocean.

Go explore what's beyond Taghazout Morocco

explore taghazout morocco and nearby towns

Taghazout is special, but it's not the only pretty town out there. Towns like Tamaraght, Aourir, and... are worth visiting as well. Tamaraght is a similar town with surf camps. If you're serious about learning to surf and meeting other tourists from all over the world, then Tamaraght is the destination for you. Aourir is a fishing village, excellent for some fishing and meeting locals.

From Taghazout Morocco, you can either head to Agadir or Essaouira. Both are good destinations, but Essaouira would be a better choice if you want to maintain those beach vibes. It's a calm city with some interesting souks, cafes, and restaurants. The atmosphere there is simply amazing. Agadir, on the other hand, is more of a loud big city with bars, a casino, and nightclubs. However, it also has some cultural scenery and interesting sites like Souk El Hed.

Done with the beach? No worries, you can visit Paradise Valley. A stretched valley that runs between the Atlas Mountains like an unending oasis. It has swimming and diving spots, unique green scenery, sunny weather, local small restaurants, and friendly people. It's a total shift from the ocean view. Be careful around the edges.

Here you go! Those are some few activities that you can try in Taghazout. Of course there's always something new to add to the list, so we'll keep updating this post to help you discover more and more.
